National Ride2Work Day is Australia’s biggest commuter riding event.
A national initiative by the Bicycle Network, the day is held annually in October and encourages everyone to enjoy happier and healthier commuting habits. It also aims to remove cars off our roads, reduce peak-hour congestion and cut commuting emissions.

Cycling to UQ
UQ supports active transport options, like cycling and walking, to improve community health and wellbeing, and reduce the impacts of emissions, traffic and pollution. Here are some of the facilities and initiatives around the University to help you join the two-wheeled commuter evolution:
- Bike racks and storage rooms – there are open-air bicycle racks on every UQ campus for you to store your bike with a good quality lock. UQ students and staff can also apply for free access to on-campus bicycle storage rooms.
- End-of-trip facilities – freshen up after your commute with free access to end-of-trip facilities including lockers, showers, change rooms and toilets.
- Self-service bicycle repair stations – flat tyre or loose bike chain? Bicycle repair stations are located on campus with tools for basic repair and maintenance tasks so you can continue on your journey.
- Routes and maps – not quite sure where you can ride on campus? Download our cycling maps. For routes to and from University, you may also like to check out the Brisbane City Council information on cycling in Brisbane.
- Bicycle safety – safety is the most important aspect of commuter riding. Read UQ’s tips for greater bicycle safety awareness.

About National Ride2Work Day
National Ride2Work Day is an annual event that encourages people to join the commuter evolution and swap their car, train or bus for a bike for their commute to and from work.
The day aims to promote the health, environmental and economic benefits of cycling, while fostering a sense of community among riders. It also raises awareness of the ease and accessibility of cycling as a regular mode of transport.
It is well-supported by workplaces and bicycle advocacy groups across Australia. More than 1,500 riders registered in 2023, travelling a combined 23,770 kilometres and saving close to 5,800 kilograms of CO2 – the equivalent of planting 232 trees (Bicycle Network).
And don’t forget, if you’re keen on giving cycling a try, there’s no need to wait until next October! Use UQ’s pathways and facilities to try jumping on a bike, getting active and cycling to work or uni today!
