The right food for our feathered friends

The Australian White IbisThe Australian White Ibis is a familiar fixture of campus life, and these long-legged larrikins love nothing more than munching on your lunch leftovers. But did you know that the ibis is a protected species whose natural diet consists of crustaceans, molluscs and insects—not burritos, sushi and sandwiches?

The Sustainability Office has developed an Ibis Management Plan to help these birds return to their natural diet, and we’re asking for your help. Here’s what you can do:

  • shoo the ibises away if they approach you for food
  • do not feed them or leave your food unattended when you eat outside
  • return your dirty plates to the service counter or throw disposable food containers in the bin
  • put your leftovers in the bin or take them away with you.
