2021 - Green Programs UQ Sustainability Week
GAP held an SDG photo competition during the week, and had some amazing photos submitted! Sustainability looks different for everyone, and each person’s interpretation of the Sustainable Development Goals is so unique.
GAP also ran a Plog-a -Thon to promote getting outdoors and staying healthy throughout lockdown, and keeping the local community clean and litter free.
UQs Carbon Literacy plan kicked off for the first time ever! UQ is the first university in Australia to launch a Carbon Literacy Program. The short accredited course teaches participants how they can reduce their emissions as an individual, community group, or organisation.
The annual Green Ambassador Program Forum was held during Sustainability Week, with members of the Energy and Sustainability team speaking about each of their roles, and what they entail. This was a great chance for the UQ community to get a better look into how sustainability works at UQ.
“Recycle Right with GAP” was an online webinar run to educate the UQ community on the different waste streams at UQ. This was hosted by the Green Ambassador Program, with Christine McCallum from the Sustainability Office providing a more in-depth explanation of how it all works!
The first ever Sustainable Universities Network (SUN) event, “Climate Conversations”, was also held during Sustainability week! This entailed three academic experts in the field of Climate Change and communication coming together to teach students and staff how best to approach those who do not understand or agree with the science of climate change. This difficult topic was handled with aplomb by both the experts and the students running the session, and all involved gained new tactics to help them when encountering a climate skeptic.
