Eurasian Coot swimming on lakeThe Eurasian Coot has a white bill and frontal shield, red eyes, black head, dark grey body, dark grey legs and lobed toes to assist in swimming and diving. It can grow up to 42 centimetres in length and can weigh up to 1.1 kilograms.

The Eurasian Coot is an omnivore and will feed on small live prey, eggs of other water birds, algae, vegetation, seeds and fruit. During the breeding season a nest of dead reeds or grasses is built where up to 10 eggs are laid.
